Council of Better Business Bureaus
OUR MISSION is to promote and foster the highest ethical relationship between
businesses and the public through voluntary self-regulation, consumer and business
education, and service excellence.
The Council of Better Business Bureaus is:
- The umbrella organization for the Better Business Bureau (BBB) system, which was
founded in 1912 and is today supported by 250,000 local business members nationwide
- Dedicated to fostering fair and honest relationships between businesses and consumers,
instilling consumer confidence and contributing to an ethical business environment
- Supported by its membership consisting of more than 300 leading-edge
national corporations, and by 132 local Better Business Bureaus
The Council of Better Business Bureaus, Inc. (CBBB) and all local Better Business
Bureaus are private, non-profit organizations funded by membership dues and other
support.
The CBBB maintains two offices which house the following divisions:

- Dispute Resolution Division - Provides national dispute resolution services to large corporations and their customers in partnership with the BBB system, develops and promotes BBB dispute resolution programs, and offers specialized training in conciliation, mediation, arbitration, and related conflict resolution techniques.
- Bureau Network Division - Provides guidance, training and marketing services
to the BBB system.
- CBBB Foundation
- CBBB Membership - Provides information and services to members of the CBBB. Markets CBBB programs and services to national corporations.
- Philanthropic Advisory Service - Promotes ethical standards within the charitable community, provides information to the public on charitable organizations, and educates individual and corporate donors on wise giving.
- Public Affairs - Researches, writes and
produces CBBB alerts and news
releases, and publications
designed to educate and inform both consumers and businesses.

National Advertising Division - Investigates complaints about misleading advertising claims and determines whether such claims have been substantiated.
National Advertising Review Board - Hears appeals of cases from the National Advertising Division.
Children's Advertising Review Unit - Provides a mechanism to safeguard responsible advertising to children.
