Who and What: Health Fairs are an
ongoing cooperative program conducted by the VA Medical Centers in our area, with our
active participation. A variety of health screenings are available for veterans at each
site. Every attendee has the opportunity to speak privately with representatives of VHA
and/or VBA. The number attending varies according to the size of the community in which
the event is held. The smallest health fairs have had as few as 20 veterans, large events
have attracted up to 300. The veteran may discuss any aspect of VA benefits - health care
or VBA programs.
Why: The events serve a variety of purposes: to provide general
information on VA programs to the community; to provide general health screenings to
veterans; to increase awareness of VA programs; to promote use of the VA system; to assist
in resolving problems veterans may have encountered with VA; and to receive community
feedback on VA activities. The fairs enable us to determine areas of VA communication that
need improvement, areas where knowledge of VA programs can be improved, and ways to
stimulate use of VA programs.
