    The mission of the Building Inspections Department is to ensure the safety and welfare of the general public by enforcing building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical code regulations within the City of Wylie.  Enforcement is achieved through plan review prior to the issuance of a permit and on-site inspections, after permit issuance, to verify compliance throughout the construction process.  Permits are required before performing any new construction or any addition, alteration or repair of existing buildings, structures, plumbing, electrical or mechanical work.

    Some of the projects where permits are required include:

    • Commercial and residential -- new construction, interior remodels, additions, alterations and repairs.

    • Plumbing,  electrical, mechanical and construction of interior walls greater than 5 feet 10 inches in height.

    • Construction of retaining walls over 4 feet in height.

    • Certificates of Occupancy (any time the occupant of a building or space changes).

    • Swimming pools, spas, hot tubs, accessory buildings, lawn irrigation systems, decks and patio covers.

    • Temporary uses and structures such as tents, Christmas tree lots and snow cone stands.

    • Driveway approaches and sidewalk installations.Fences and security walls.

    • Demolition of structures.


    Other Functions of the Department include:

    • Investigate violations and take necessary action to obtain compliance - including issuance of citations.

    • Enforcement of applicable ordinances relating to the Building Inspection Department.

    • Establish maximum occupant capacity.

    • Process Special House-moving requests, Temporary Use permits.


    The City of Wylie has adopted and currently enforces the following construction codes:
     

    • Uniform Building, 1997 edition
    • Uniform Plumbing and Mechanical Codes, 2000 edition
    • National Electrical Code, 1999 edition

A number of snack vending machines are electrically operated. There are snack vending machines that are see-through or have fronts which are glass-made. Various snack vending machines can only dispense as little as six or ten types of snacks or it can sell a wide range of snack and beverage choices.
