| Robert Miller: Sills to be high note at arts gala 04/16/2001 By Robert Miller / The Dallas Morning News Beverly Sills, who conquered the world of performing arts both as an opera diva and a no-nonsense administrator, will help launch a Campaign to Construct the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts at a gala March 4 at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center.
Her appearance was announced over the weekend by William H. "Bill" Lively, president and chief executive officer of the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts Foundation.
Ms. Sills chairs the board of directors of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York and previously rescued the New York City Opera Company from financial collapse.
On Sept. 15, other gala headliners will be announced.
Mr. Lively said the gala will include "a Celebrity Reception featuring performing artists from throughout the United States representing theater, dance, musical theater and opera and will be followed by an elegant banquet for an audience of 1,400."
The gala's Grand Finale will feature internationally renowned performers and representatives of many of Dallas' performing arts organizations.

The public is invited to a free panel discussion focusing on "Who Owns the Past?" which includes underwater explorer Robert Ballard.
The event will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Bob Hope Theatre of the Meadows School of the Arts, 6101 Bishop Blvd. on the Southern Methodist University campus.
It is part of the inaugural American Airlines Tate Academic Summit.
Other panelists include SMU professors Dr. Mike Adler, anthropology; Dr. John Hopkins, history; and Dr. Susan Scafidi, law.
Dr. Caroline Brettell, chairwoman of SMU's Anthropology Department, will serve as moderator.
China expert Douglas H. Paal will discuss "A China Policy for the New Administration" when he addresses an 11:45 a.m. Tuesday luncheon at the Park City Club, sponsored by the Dallas Council on World Affairs and the American Jewish Committee.
