To encourage an appreciation of the visual arts
in the City of Plano, a venue for area artists is provided through the Municipal Art
Galleries. Art selected by the Municipal Art Committee is displayed at the Municipal
Center, 1520 Ave. K, and at the Plano Centre, 2000 E. Spring Creek Parkway. The
length of each exhibit is one month with display areas located throughout the
buildings. Student and childrens art is also accepted and is displayed in the
Student Gallery on the first floor in the Municipal Center, or at Municipal Center South,
1409 Ave. K.
"Convergence," an art exhibit by Janice Howell, will be
displayed June 1-28 at the Municipal
Galleries. In July, her exhibit will move to Plano Centre. A Texas
native, Janice has painted in acrylics and watercolor for six years. She
has studied at home and abroad in France, Italy, and Spain with Jane
Jones, Rob Erdle, Doug Walton, Skip Lawrence, Jane Stephenson and
Milford Zornes. She has degrees from Southern Methodist University and
Texas Tech University. Her art is filled with life experiences such as
travel, music and people. In a unique abstract style, she paints what
she feels rather than what she views. The paintings are visual
stories--a slice of life. The principles and elements of design are used
to convey content and emotion. Her highly personal paintings have
received awards in national, regional, and local shows. Cities,
businesses, restaurants, churches and individuals nationwide have
purchased her works. Janice is Vice President of Plano Art Association
and a member of Southwestern Watercolor Society.
An exhibit of art from the Plano ISD Council of PTA's after-school art
program will be displayed at Plano Municipal Center Student Gallery, 1520
Avenue K, and Plano Municipal Center South,
1409 Avenue K, during the month of May. This innovative student exhibit
was sponsored by the Junior League of Plano and Presbyterian Hospital of
Plano. The exhibit highlights works from elementary and middle school
students and includes drawings, pastels, watercolors and paintings on
canvas. The unique aspect of this exhibit is the wide spectrum of age,
ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds of the students. The convenience
of an after-school program allows children who may have never taken an
art class to experience art and create art. The hope is to build a
lifelong respect for art, and for some, perhaps an awareness of a talent
that might lead to a career in the field of art. Instructor Christine
Awad says, "I've been able to reach children from all over the
world who have not mastered the English language, but have mastered the
confidence and creativity found in art."
The Municipal Center Galleries are open from 8 a.m. to
5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free. For additional information about the Municipal Art Galleries please contact
