Carroll ISD's goal is
to develop the student as a whole and as an individual. Emphasis is
placed on providing the child basic academic skills and opportunities to
apply these skills to higher level thinking. It is the aim of the
district to provide the best possible preparation for its students'
college education or future employment. The curriculum of the Carroll
ISD is designed to help the child reach his or her highest potential.
Choose from the following general
curriculum topics:
Elementary
School
On the elementary level, attention is
focused on language arts, mathematics, science/health and social studies;
and each subject is developed in a way to make learning exciting and fun
for the child.
The language arts program is a
balanced program which integrates listening, speaking, reading,
literature, and writing. Language arts and reading instruction occur daily
and skill development is ongoing and developmental. The mathematics
program emphasizes the development of meaning, concepts, and skills. There
is an emphasis on problem solving and the application of math skills to
solve increasingly complex problems. There are many hands-on experiences,
and concrete materials are used to provide a basis for understanding
numbers and processes.
Enrichment and lab classes include
art, music, physical education, science, computer, library skills, and/or
Spanish. At this stage, which includes grades kindergarten through four, a
child's special needs are first addressed through tutoring, special
education, gifted student programs (QUEST) and ESL (English as a Second
Language) classes.

Intermediate
School
The intermediate schools house grades
five and six in an educational environment that is appropriate for
students during preadolescence. Academic teaming is used, and the
curriculum becomes an integrated framework for meaningful learning.
Language Arts continues to be integrated with increasing emphasis on
spelling, grammar, punctuation, and fluency of reading and writing.
Mathematics focuses on more complex knowledge and skills with an emphasis
on real-life problem solving. Students have the opportunity to choose from
a variety of electives including choir, music, band, art, computer and
Spanish. Science labs continue to offer students powerful hands-on lab
activities.

Middle
School
In middle school, grades seven and
eight, the curriculum expands to allow for each student's uniqueness. The
middle school uses the academic teaming concept to meet the developmental
needs of all students. Classes are designed for middle level students in
math, English and science, and courses are available to give high school
credit for Spanish I, Algebra I, Health and Keyboarding. Also, remedial
classes are available in the areas of reading and mathematics. Electives
in art, band, choir, communications and athletics are introduced at the
middle school level.

High
School
Upon reaching high school in the
Carroll ISD, the student will be familiar with the system which is
designed to provide the highest standard of educational achievement. At
this level, a wide selection of academic and elective courses are offered
to the student to further prepare him or her for higher education. Many
activities, both curricular and co-curricular, are available, and students
are encouraged to become a part of as many as they choose.
The core curriculum expands to
accommodate the various areas of mathematics, science and social studies.
The list of electives first introduced in middle school (art, band, choir,
communications and athletics) is further developed to include such classes
as homemaking, foreign languages (French, Spanish, and Latin), business
education, speech, theater, debate, choral music, peer assistance
leadership, industrial technology and vocational classes. Other advanced
courses include 18 Advanced Placement courses in many areas and numerous
honors courses.

Testing
Students in the Carroll Independent
School District consistently score significantly higher than the state
average on the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) test. This
three-part test measures basic skills, higher level thinking and
problem-solving capabilities in the student. Students in grades 3-8 and 10
(Exit Level) are given the TAAS test annually.
High School, students in the Carroll
ISD tend to score much higher on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) than
state and national scores. On average, 90 percent of graduating seniors
take some form of college entrance exam. Approximately 40 percent of the
graduating seniors score above the criterion SAT or ACT.

Gifted
Programs
Students who prove they are
academically gifted and talented have the opportunity to become part of
the district's gifted student program called QUEST. On the elementary
school level, students would be a part of a "satellite" class,
outside of their regular class. Upon entering middle and high school,
students' needs are served in a variety of ways. Review of past
performance and nominations by teachers and/or parents may qualify
students for this program. Both objective and subjective measures are used
to determine eligibility for individual students.
Students are reviewed continuously
throughout their school years, and may be selected for the program at any
time. Consequently, students performance in the program is also reviewed
from time to time to determine progress. Parents are kept informed about
individual student progress through a mid-year evaluation and an
end-of-the-year parent conference.

Special
Education
Special education classes are
available for students with disabilities. Services for hearing or sight
disability begin at a very young age, whereas services for students with
other disabilities begin at appropriate age levels.
A child's need for special education
classes can be facilitated by referral from the student's home school by
anyone who knows his or her educational needs. Individual committees plan
for each student with an identified disability and a need for special
education services.
The Carroll Independent School
District is responsible for identifying, locating, and evaluating at no
cost to families, all individuals 0 through 21 years of age with
disabilities who are in need of special services and related services who
reside within school district boundaries. Educational areas of concern
include, but are not limited to: cognition, language, articulation,
socialization, self-help, and motor skills.
Children who have a disability or are
suspected of having a disability should be referred to Project Child Find.
Contact: Patsy Stanley, Educational Diagnostician, CISD Child Find
Coordinator at (817) 949-8400. Referrals made during the summer should be
directed to the CISD Department of Special Programs, Dr. Cathy Friar at
(817) 949-7050.

Fine
Arts Program
Starting with an elementary
school-level music and art program, the district offers a wide selection
of classes for appreciation of the fine arts.
At fifth grade, basic art classes help
the student realize his or her creative skills. Beginning in the sixth
grade, band instruction is introduced, with marching band offered by the
ninth grade. Grades five and up may choose choir as an elective. Beginning
in seventh grade, students may be involved in speech, drama, debate and
theater arts. Along this line are advanced high school courses such as
theater production, public speaking and competition-level speech and
debate-with opportunities for district and state recognition.

State and National Recognition
of CISD
Student programs in the Carroll ISD
regularly win district awards in all areas. The Carroll High School band
is often chosen for state marching contests and brings home awards from
University Interscholastic League (UIL) marching and performance
competitions. Each year, high school students take top honors in district,
regional and state contests in the areas of speech, drama, choir,
business, science, and journalism.
In athletics, student teams in
football, baseball, basketball, track and field, volleyball, softball,
golf and tennis participate in championship play. Every year, Carroll ISD
is well-represented in state playoffs and finalist competitions.
High test scores and college entrance
exams, coupled with low dropout rates and high attendance have earned CISD
an "Exemplary" rating from the Texas Education Agency. Only four
districts out of 1,045 have earned the exemplary rating for three years.
Carroll ISD continues to set the standard in the state for academic
achievement.
The philosophy of the Carroll ISD is
to provide quality co-curricular activities and opportunities to help
students develop to their highest potential while teaching them the value
of working in team situations and realizing their self-worth as
individuals.
