| Entertainment notes 04/08/2001 Met Opera broadcast remembers critic Ardoin
Critic Martin Bernheimer presented a six-minute tribute to the late John Ardoin, retired music critic of The Dallas Morning News, during the first intermission of Saturday's broadcast of Parsifal by the Metropolitan Opera.
Mr. Bernheimer, who had known Mr. Ardoin for 41 years, praised his professional and personal qualities and quoted from Mr. Ardoin's reviews and commentaries. He also mentioned Mr. Ardoin's longtime fascination and friendship with soprano Maria Callas, as well as his interest in Elvis Presley, who was born on the same day as Mr. Ardoin (Jan. 8, 1935).
Mr. Bernheimer said that Mr. Ardoin's nickname for him was "Martini" and he in turn called Mr. Ardoin "Giovanni" Italian for "John."
"He will be missed. Bravo, Giovanni," Mr. Bernheimer concluded.
Mr. Ardoin, who died last month in Costa Rica, was to have been an intermission guest for the Met's final broadcast of this season, of Berg's Lulu.

Danny Gaither dies at 62
ANDERSON, Ind. Daniel J. "Danny" Gaither, an original member of the nationally known gospel music act the Gaither Trio, died in Indianapolis on Friday of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He was 62.
Mr. Gaither, his brother, Bill, and sister, Mary Ann, were the original Gaither Trio. Mary Ann was later replaced by Bill's wife, Gloria.
The group was inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 1999.
In 1996, a biopsy on a swollen area of Mr. Gaither's left shoulder revealed the cancer. It went into remission in 1999 after stem-cell transplants and other treatment but later recurred, forcing him to stop touring last fall.
