Governments exist to protect the health, safety and welfare of its citizens. Whether it be providing roads for safe and efficient mobility, utilities for clean drinking water and removal of waste, parks for recreation, or storm water management for protection from flooding, public works is the backbone of that existence. Management of public works facilities is a very important component of the responsibilities of cities, counties, and special districts across North Central Texas. The quality of the region’s infrastructure (its roads, water distribution, wastewater collection, and storm drainage systems) has always been a high priority and a source of pride for its communities. For almost twenty-five years NCTCOG has supported the public works industry in North Central Texas through publication and maintenance of the Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction. Now that the process to comprehensively review and revise the Standard Specifications is coming to a close and publication of the 4th Edition will occur this year, NCTCOG is proposing new cooperative efforts to address pertinent issues facing the region. NCTCOG’s activities are overseen by the newly restructured Public Works Council.
Originating in 1977 as the Standard Specifications Advisory Committee, becoming the Public Works Advisory Committee in 1984, and evolving into the Public Works Council in 2001, this committee is composed of public and private sector professionals with public works and development expertise. The structure of the Public Works Council is based on large jurisdiction and subregion representation. The subregions are intended to provide a linkage to the Council for all jurisdictions in the region and allow for subregion meetings to address localized issues.
