Resource Conservation and Solid Waste
The North Central Texas region generates
more than 6 million tons of solid waste each year, of which approximately 10% is recycled
and the remainder landfilled by a variety of public and private agencies. As the
designated regional municipal solid waste planning agency, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG)
has developed a set of regional strategies for waste minimization, reuse/recycling,
composting, disposal of household hazardous waste and used oil and prevention of illegal
dumping. NCTCOG, through its Resource Conservation Council, has prepared a Regional Solid Waste Management Plan for North Central Texas (1990- 2010)
which guides solid waste activities and decisions throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth
Metroplex. This document was adopted by the Texas
Natural Resource Conservation Commission in 1994. Through six regional partnerships, NCTCOG intends to strengthen the
regional cooperative process through the funding of local/regional projects.
