Yahoo will remove adult-related products from sites

04/13/2001

Bloomberg News

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Yahoo! Inc., owner of the most-used Internet search site, will remove adult- related products such as videos and digital video disks from its shopping, auction and classified Web sites.

The company said in a statement that it made the decision because of requests from its members. Yahoo also said it will not sign new agreements for adult-related banner advertisements on its network. Yahoo officials weren't immediately available to comment.

Yahoo was criticized after the Los Angeles Times reported the company was expanding an online store selling pornographic videos. The American Family Association, a religious advocacy group, said in a statement yesterday that it asked U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft to prosecute Yahoo for its involvement in the sale of "obscene material and child pornography."

"Profiting from the sexual exploitation of children and women by Yahoo is not only degrading to all children and women but is patently illegal," said Patrick Trueman, a lawyer for the group, in the statement.

Officials at the Tupelo, Mississippi-based American Family Association weren't immediately available to comment. Yahoo expects to make the changes over the next few weeks, it said in the statement distributed by Business Wire.

Shares of the Santa Clara, California-based company rose $1.10 to $16.96 yesterday.
