| One fatality in single-engine plane crash in Matagorda County 04/13/2001 Associated Press BAY CITY, Texas A West Texas physician was killed when his single-engine plane crashed about 10 miles north of the Bay City Airport in Matagorda County, authorities said today.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Roland Herwig said that the 1964 model Cessna 172E ran out of fuel and crashed near the Matagorda/Brazoria county line at 9:46 p.m. Thursday.
The pilot, Dr. Clifton Pearce, 46, of Alpine, died in the crash. Pearce was the sole occupant of the aircraft, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.
DPS said the plane was en route to Matagorda County when it crashed in a light drizzle.
Herwig said the aircraft was destroyed, and it took authorities several hours to locate the wreckage at 4:30 a.m. Friday because of drizzle and intermittent rain.
Authorities said further details were unavailable. The National Transportation Safety Board was to investigate the crash.
