Esther Wu: Prosperity awaits in Lunar New Year

Don't put away the New Year's noisemakers and champagne yet. In less than two weeks many Asians and Asian-Americans will be celebrating the Lunar New Year.

Many Chinese believe the first meal of the year will determine their prosperity for the coming year, which begins Jan. 24. Perhaps that is why many Asian groups hold a formal banquet.

The following are a few of the local celebrations. Most are open to the public. Reservations are required, and seating is often limited. So call ahead if you plan to usher in the new year with the local Asian community.

• The Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce of Dallas/Fort Worth will hold a charity ball at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hotel Inter-Continental. Tickets are $35. Call 214-668-5389. The Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats will perform.

• The Young Professionals Group of the Japan-American Society of Dallas/Fort Worth will hold a Mochitsuki party and potluck supper at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Big Thicket at White Rock Lake, 430 Lawther Drive. Tickets are $5 for members, $8 for non-members. Call 214-761-1791.

• The North Texas Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce will celebrate at 7 p.m. Jan. 19 at Maxim's Restaurant, 310 Terrace Drive, Richardson. Tickets are $30; community and corporate tables of 10 are $300 to $1,000. Call 972-235-8678. Community performers featured.

• The Vietnamese American Community of Greater Dallas will celebrate at 8 a.m. Jan. 20 at the Vietnamese Community Center, 3221 Belt Line Road in Garland. Community performers, ethnic foods featured. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children. That evening the Miss Ao Dai Dallas Pageant will be held at 7 p.m. at the Westin Galleria Hotel. Tickets are from $40-$75 for dinner and pageant or $25 for the pageant. Call 214-274-4128.

• The Taiwanese Association will hold a banquet at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at Maxim's Restaurant. Tickets are $20 for members, $25 for non-members. Call 972-242-7220. Community performers featured.

• The Association of Chinese Professionals' banquet will be at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 21 at Maxim's Restaurant. Tickets are $20. Call 972-238-6039. Community performers featured.

• The All Asian American Chamber of Commerce will meet at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 27 in Fort Worth Botanical Garden's Gardens Restaurant, 3220 Rock Springs Road in Fort Worth. Community performers and traditional foods featured. Tickets are $15 for members, $20 for non-members. Call 817-475-4783.

• The Trammell & Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art, 2010 Flora St., will hold activities from noon to 3 p.m. Jan. 27. Lion dancers, story-telling and an "Animal Hunt'' will be featured. Free admission. Call 214-979-6435.

• The Dallas-China Partnership reception is at 6 p.m. Feb. 2 at Dallas City Hall. Presented by Felix Chen, Robert Hsueh, Charles Ku, Peter Ng and the city's Office of International Affairs, this event is by invitation only.

• The North Texas Cantonese Association's banquet will be 6:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at Arc-En-Ciel Restaurant, 3555 W. Walnut St., Garland. Tickets are $25. Call 972-672-1215.Community performers featured.

• The Sino American Chamber of Commerce will hold a dinner at 7 p.m. Feb. 3 at Hong Kong Royale, 221 W. Polk St., Richardson. Tickets are $20. Call 972-480-8908. Professional magician featured.

• The Organization of Chinese Americans will celebrate at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at Maxim's Restaurant. Tickets are $25; corporate and community tables are $250 to $500. Call 972-772-3883. U.S. Attorney Paul Coggins will speak. Community performers featured.
