21-year News employee Israel Cuevas dies

04/12/2001

From staff reports

Israel Cuevas, a 21-year employee of The Dallas Morning News, died Sunday from complications of pneumonia and diabetes.

Services for Mr. Cuevas, 38, were Tuesday at Gonzalez Funeral Home Chapel, Dallas. Burial was at Laurel Land Memorial Park.

Mr. Cuevas worked in The News' Plano plant in the packaging department. Department head Doug Barlow said Mr. Cuevas was a "jack-of-all-trades" who made sure the printing and collating machinery ran properly during night shifts, when the paper is printed and assembled.

Mr. Cuevas was born in Mexico, and his family came to Dallas in 1969.

He graduated from Skyline High School and went to work for The News in 1980, his sister Martha Cuevas said.

His sister said he enjoyed taking his many nieces and nephews out to the movies and places like Six Flags. Ms. Cuevas said he liked to stay busy and loved to work.

"He always made sure that on birthdays everyone had a present and liked to make sure that my Mom and Dad had everything they needed," she said.

In addition to his sister, Mr. Cuevas is survived by his parents, Hilario and Ofelia Cuevas of Dallas; three brothers, Daniel Cuevas, David Cuevas and Paul Cuevas, all of Dallas; and three other sisters, Virginia Ebey, Sara Bravo and Maria M. Vara, all of Dallas.
