| Bush urges public push for tax cuts 04/08/2001 Associated Press WASHINGTON One day after the Senate voted to trim his tax cut plan, President Bush said Saturday that many lawmakers "are still making their minds up" and that critical votes lie ahead.
President Bush urged Americans to keep pressure on lawmakers to stand by his budget goals.
"If we're to pass a substantial tax cut the people must make their voices heard. The crucial votes are still ahead," Mr. Bush said in his weekly radio address. "They are decisions we cannot afford to get wrong."
The president urged Americans to raise their voices when House and Senate members appear at town meetings during this month's congressional recess.
"Don't just send them what you earn, tell them what you think," he said. "I hope they'll listen carefully."
Mr. Bush reinforced his appeal by including a Web address www.bushtaxrelief.com that offers times and places of local meetings with senators and House members over the next few weeks.
Mr. Bush's radio address comments came a day after Friday's 65-35 Senate vote for a budget blueprint that would trim his proposed $1.6 trillion, 10-year tax cut by about $300 billion.
