NewSpirit, a gospel trio formed in 1999 by three men who together have more than 45 years of music ministry as well as three Grammy and fourteen Dove Awards will be in concert Sunday night at Mimosa Lane Baptist Church in Mesquite. David Will and Barry Weeks performed with legendary southern gospel quartet The Imperials, a decades-old group that has launched careers of former members like Russ Taff and Jonathan Pierce. South Texan Ben Jacklin was lead vocalist for the Lowell Lundstrom Singers. NewSpirit will perform at 6:30 p.m. at Mimosa Lane Baptist, 1233 N. Belt Line Road. Call 972-288-7426.
Forum will focus on Islam-West relations
John L. Esposito, founding director of the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University, will lead a forum Thursday on "Islam and the West: Clash or Dialogue of Civilizations." The event begins with a reception at 6 p.m. at Brook Hollow Golf Club, 8301 Harry Hines Blvd. Dr. Esposito is a university professor at Georgetown and edited the Oxford History of Islam that was released last year by Oxford University Press. The Dallas event is part of the Dallas Council on World Affairs' Global Vision Series and co-sponsored by The Dallas Morning News. Gospelfest to feature music and preaching
R&B recording artist Peabo Bryson and actor-turned-evangelist Leon Isaac Kennedy will headline Gospelfest 2001 next weekend. A hip-hop gospel concert will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Christian Chapel C.M.E. Church, 14120 Noel Road. Cost is $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Mr. Kennedy will preach March 24 during the Praise/Preachfest from noon to 4 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, 2922 MLK Blvd. Mr. Bryson will perform at 7 p.m. March 24 with the 200-voice Valour Foundation Gospel Choir at Christian Chapel. Advance tickets are $25, $30 at the door. Concert packages are $30 for both; call 214-372-5490. Mr. Bryson and Mr. Kennedy will join other speakers at a reception at 7 p.m. Friday at the Westin Galleria, 13340 Dallas Parkway. Cost is $100 and proceeds benefit the nonprofit Valour Foundation.
FW Episcopal bishop to give Lenten address
The Rt. Rev. Jack Iker, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth, will lead a Lenten service Friday at St. Matthias' Church (Episcopal) in Dallas. The service, part of a series on Fridays during Lent, includes praying the Stations of the Cross. The Rev. Dwight D. Duncan, rector, said a procession of liturgical ministers will lead the prayers, and the service will conclude with the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
