| Cotton Bowl Hall to add 7 members 04/13/2001 By Cathy Harasta / The Dallas Morning News Southwestern Bell and the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association on Thursday announced the seven-member class of 2001 for induction into the Southwestern Bell Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame.
The ceremony, free and open to the public, will take place at 11 a.m. on May 15 at Fair Park's Cotton Bowl Plaza. The inductees are: Texas tackle Scott Appleton, Syracuse halfback Ernie Davis, Miami defensive tackle Russell Maryland, Clemson and Rice coach Jess Neely, Arkansas defensive tackle Loyd Phillips, Texas split end Charles "Cotton" Speyrer and Houston coach Bill Yeoman.
Appleton, Davis and Neely will be inducted posthumously, with family members representing them at the ceremony. Cotton Bowl officials said the other four class members plan to attend the ceremony.
The class of 2001 is the Hall's fourth.
Appleton, from Brady, Texas, played in the 1962, '63 and '64 Classics. In his final Cotton Bowl, he sacked Navy's Roger Staubach twice during the Longhorns' 28-6 victory.
Davis, the first black to win the Heisman Trophy, scored two touchdowns as Syracuse beat Texas, 23-14, in the 1960 Classic.
Maryland, a former Dallas Cowboy, helped Miami rout Texas, 46-3, in the 1991 Classic with his nine tackles and three sacks. He also caused a fumble on a day the Longhorns turned over the ball five times.
Neely, who took Rice to three Cotton Bowls in the 1950s, posted a 3-1-0 Classic coaching record.
Phillips, from Longview, Texas, had nine tackles in the 1965 Classic and 17 in the '66 edition.
Speyrer, from Port Arthur, Texas, helped the Longhorns win the Classics in 1969 and '70. His fourth-down reception against Notre Dame in 1970 set up the national-title-clinching touchdown.
Yeoman coached the Cougars to four Cotton Bowls, including the 1977 Classic in Houston's first Southwest Conference season.
