Roundup: Berkner hands Allen first district baseball loss

04/11/2001

From Staff Reports

ALLEN – It took eight innings, but Richardson Berkner defeated Allen, 7-6, on Tuesday and ended the Allen baseball team's hopes for an undefeated record in District 9-5A.

Berkner led 6-2 going into the sixth, but Allen, No. 2 in The News' Class 5A area poll, tied the game with four runs, two on shortstop John Wicker's home run.

Designated hitter Dustin Mantell led off the eighth with a single for Berkner (10-6, 7-2). After a one-out sacrifice bunt by first baseman Jordan Roberts, Mantell scored on an Allen fielding error to give Berkner a 7-6 lead. Left-handed pitcher B.J. Brandenberger came in and shut down Allen (17-3, 8-1) in the bottom half of the eighth to secure the win.

Arlington Heights 9, FW Western Hills 6: Top-ranked Western Hills (20-2, 8-1) carried a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth before letting the game and its District 7-4A lead slip away.

Arlington Heights (13-7, 8-1) put together a five-run fifth and tied the game in the sixth when Brad Wiggins tripled off the wall and scored on an error. Ryan Woody put Arlington Heights up for good with an inside-the-park home run with two men on base.

Saginaw Boswell 3, Southlake Carroll 2: Carroll's Eric Stiles worked himself into and out of a seventh-inning jam against Southlake Carroll, ranked No. 4 in The News' Class 4A area poll, to notch a key District 6-4A victory.

Boswell (8-11, 3-2) took the lead in the sixth by scoring two runs off Carroll starter Kody Haverkamp. Todd Hawpe singled to center to drive in Casey DeRose. Then Haverkamp threw a wild pitch that allowed Kyle Hatcher to score. Carroll (12-7, 3-2) tried to rally in the seventh, but Stiles struck out Clint Humphrey with runners at first and second.

Colleyville Heritage 4, Richland 1: Colleyville Heritage (18-4, 7-2) pulled into a first-place tie in District 5-5A by scratching out a win at Richland (13-4, 7-2). Ben Maitland pitched a five-hitter for his second victory over Richland. Colleyville Heritage scored three runs in the fourth inning on a slow roller, a wild pitch and a throwing error. Mario Gallizzi had two doubles to lead Colleyville Heritage. Jon Pokluda went 3-for-4 for Richland.
