Clocker's corner 04/06/2001 Gary West/The Dallas Morning News Clocker's Corner takes an inside look at the morning workouts at Lone Star Park. Here is the report of the workouts from Friday, April 6.
Trainer Ronnie Werner appears to have several talented young horses for owner Tom Durant, and some of them were on display during Friday's workouts. Star Stormy, a $50,000 purchase and a daughter of Hennessy, zipped three furlongs out of the starting gate in :34.80. Also for Werner, City Street popped out of the gate and went a half-mile in :47.80.
And West End, who won his debut at Louisiana Downs by five lengths, turned in one of the most impressive moves of the week when he worked five furlongs in 1:00.80 West End left the five-furlong marker about three lengths behind stablemate Cyberzone and while under a firm hold rated calmly until the stop of the stretch. At the point, West End moved to the outside and charged like a marauder through the lane. He ran the final quarter-mile in :23.29 and hit the wire about eight lengths ahead of Cyberzone. West End will be hard to beat in his Lone Star debut.
In a trio of 2-year-olds working a half-mile from the gate, Our Creole Lady, a daughter of Spend A Buck, proved clearly best, stopping the watch at :48.80 and finishing two lengths ahead of her workmates, and she appeared to have plenty left in the tank.
Toppa The Hill had a useful half-mile move in :47.80, and Miswaki Tex looked sharp working six furlongs in 1:13.60.
