A Day at the Races 04/07/2001
Torgan, eighth race
The eighth race has attracted a cohort of professional racehorses, old veterans who are as reliable as the U.S. mail. OK, more reliable than the U.S. mail. Dickey Rickey, Kodi Act and Chilly A together have won 30 races in their careers and earned more than $500,000. But here they might have jumped into the cage with a tiger.
Torgan has been keeping some classy company at Gulfstream Park in Florida. He has won $291,063 and 12 races in his career.
Hoovergetthekeys and Fifty Stars, sixth race
Hoovergetthekeys and Fifty Stars are tough to separate in the Lone Star Derby; so you might not want to try. Hoover has been getting more than keys lately, winning two derbies, the Golden Gate and El Camino Real, at Golden Gate. And Fifty Stars, of course, won the rich Louisiana Derby.
Blue Eyed Buck, ninth race
Blue Eyed Buck first suggested he had talent one morning back in February at Fair Grounds, where he worked a bullet half-mile from the gate in :48.60. Then on March 21, Blue Eyed Buck won a training race by five lengths at Fair Grounds.
The Lone Star Derby is part of a national Pick Three, which also includes the Illinois Derby from Sportsman's Park and the Santa Anita Derby from, of course, Santa Anita. The Illinois Derby looks to be a two-horse race between Distilled and Dream Run. Hoovergetthekeys and Fifty Stars have an edge at Lone Star. And in the Santa Anita Derby, Point Given and Crafty C.T. stand out.
