A Day at the Races 04/13/2001
Our Creole Lady, first race
Eight Texas-bred 2-year-old fillies compete in the first race Friday, and Our Creole Lady is cut out to be a good one. She is a daughter of Spend a Buck, who won the 1985 Kentucky Derby in front-running style, and her broodmare stallion (Creole Dancer) was an exceptionally fast stakes-winning sprinter.
The chestnut filly worked a fast four furlongs from the gate April 6 while under a nice hold by the exercise rider, and her trainer Danny Pish has won with four 2-year-old first-time starters at Lone Star Park. Moreover, her inside post position is an advantage because of the short run to the turn.
Pyrite Honor, ninth race
The good recent form of Go Flying and Lil Chick make the two fillies the one's to beat in the ninth race. However, both are come-from-behind types who may spot Pyrite Honor too much of a lead to recover.
The quick filly has been showing early speed to superior maiden rivals this winter at the Fair Grounds, and she may be able to sprint clear in this two-turn race. She has the best of local connections in trainer Chris Candies and rider Ron Ardoin, and she drew the most advantageous post position.
Perfect Parfait, Wings of Jones, seventh race
Perfect Parfait has been an exacta player's dream in finishing first or second in 19 of 28 career races. He won his last two main-track races this season at the Fair Grounds, and he had an excellent second-place tuneup on the turf.
Wings of Jones is a Lone Star Park horse for course, having won three of 11 local races and placing in four of his defeats. He is another arriving from the Fair Grounds at the top of his game, and he has enough back class to handle the jump in claiming price.
Real Cozzy, Oaklawn Park, 10th race
The Grade II Fantasy Stakes has attracted a deep and talented field of 3-year-old fillies, and Real Cozzy is putting her unbeaten streak on the line. The late-running gray has used a powerful late punch in each of her three victories, including a determined score in the Grade II Fair Grounds Oaks. This field is certain to set a brisk pace, and she should be able to save ground from her inside post position.
A full field of 12 maiden-allowance fillies contest seven furlongs in the fourth race at Keeneland, and Victory Ride appears ready to win at first asking. The beautifully bred daughter of Seeking the Gold capped her debut preparations with a sizzling four-furlong workout, and she represents a stable that knows how to win with a first-time starter. Also notice the presence of Hall Of Fame rider Pat Day.
