Man accused of raping 4-year-old at day-care center

04/07/2001

Associated Press

COVINGTON, La. – A Slidell man has been accused of sexually assaulting a 4-year-old girl at a day-care center his mother operates out of their home, sheriff's investigators said.

Winston Baker, 19, was booked late Friday on a charge of aggravated rape and jailed in lieu of $500,000 bond. Under Louisiana law, rape of a person under the age of 12 can be punished by death.

The St. Tammany Parish sheriff's office said an investigation began March 28 after a complaint by the mother of the alleged victim. Investigators said the alleged assault took place during "nap time" when the children were unsupervised by other adults in the home.

Investigators said Baker apparently had been living at the house since February.
