Mr. Stolz, who won out over 55 other applicants, was among five finalists to compete today in an audition over the public address system at the Cotton Bowl.

The Washington County native wept with emotion when the decision was announced, recalling how his father had taken him to see Big Tex when he was 8 years old.

Mr. Stolz will be only the sixth voice of Big Tex since 1953, when the 52-foot icon began greeting fairgoers.

The most famous of the Big Tex voices was Jim Lowe, a local radio personality, who held the job for a majority of the years from 1954-1998. Mr. Lowe died May 30.
