What
is Planning?
"Would you tell me which way I ought to go from here?"
asked Alice. "That depends a good deal on where you want to get," said the
Cheshire Cat. "I really don't care where," replied Alice. "Then it
doesn't much matter which way you go," said the Cat.
(Alice in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll)
City planning is an organized and methodical way of preparing for the
future; of identifying community goals and how to reach them. If nobody cared
about the future of the community - about where it was going - then there would
be no such thing as planning. It wouldn't matter "which way you go."
Planning isn't just about where roads will be built, how big home lots should
be, and where schools or businesses should locate. It's understanding that each
decision has innumerable effects on many other aspects of our lives.
