Life at DCAD

While the Dallas Central Appraisal District is a political subdivision of the State of Texas, the leadership team of the District has attempted to operate the District more like a business than the typical stereotypes associated with government operations. Much like a private corporation our policies and budgets are approved by our Board of Directors while the day to day operations of the District are under the leadership of our Chief Executive Officer and his staff. At DCAD we strive to provide the highest quality product possible at a reasonable price to the jurisdictions we serve while providing exemplary customer service to the taxpayers of greater Dallas County. As an employee at DCAD you will be expected to treat our customers, the taxpayers of greater Dallas County, with respect and dignity.

Many of the employees of the District are involved gathering information regarding the value of property within our jurisdictional limits as well as providing information concerning the ad valorem tax appraisal process to the taxpayers of the county. To be effective in this pursuit it requires that we remember that our mission is to not only obtain the correct value on a property, but to be able to explain to taxpayers how we have done our job and to fully answer their questions and concerns. This requires not only strong technical skills, but an ability to communicate verbally and in writing the reason for our actions. Employees with these abilities will find they are usually successful in a career at the District.

Most employees of the District will find that their work week will run no more than 40 hours for most of the year. During the Appraisal Review Board process, employees in some divisions may have to work overtime including some evening and weekend work. In all cases non-exempt employees are paid overtime pay while exempt employees typically receive some compensatory time for the extra hours worked. While we will do what is necessary to complete our mission, we respect the value of each employee’s time with their family and strive to limit overtime to essential work.

The District places a high emphasis on timeliness and attendance, and has initiated programs to reward high performance in this area. Individuals who are late to work, or have poor attendance habits will find the District a difficult place to work.

Activities with other employees are encouraged and supported throughout the year. The District’s employee recreation committee in conjunction with Human Resources plans two golf tournaments per year, coordinates a spring softball league, an annual health and benefits fair, an annual wellness day program, as well as coordinating group outings to the Texas Rangers, Dallas Stars, and Dallas Mavericks games.

If you work hard, enjoy public contact, and want to contribute to an important governmental function, we believe you will find a career with the Appraisal District to be both professionally rewarding and personally satisfying.
