Dr. John Ferraris, Head
of UTD’s Chemistry Department,
Wins Prestigious W. T. Doherty Recognition Award
Honor
Given For Significant Achievement In Research, Teaching, Service
RICHARDSON, Texas (May 8, 2001) – Dr. John P. Ferraris, head
of the Chemistry Department at The University of Texas at Dallas,
has
been named this year’s winner of the W. T. Doherty Award by the
Dallas-Fort Worth Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS).
The award
will be formally presented at a dinner meeting of the section in
September at which Ferraris will deliver a technical lecture.
The award, which includes an honorarium of $1,000, recognizes
significant achievement in research, teaching and service – in
Ferraris’
case, his work in the field of conducting polymers for energy storage,
light emission, electrochromism and membrane separations.
The award was established by the local section of the ACS to
honor the memory of Wilfred Thomas “Doc” Doherty, one of the
founding trustees and later
president of the Robert A. Welch Foundation, a Texas-based
philanthropic organization that supports chemical research.
The first award was
given in 1972, the year after Doherty’s death.
The 54-year-old Ferraris, who recently celebrated his 25th
anniversary at UTD, said he was “both honored and humbled” at
having been
selected for the award by his peers.
“This award honors not just me and my work, but also the
excellent work of the students and postdoctoral associates with whom I
have
had the privilege of working during the course of my career,”
Ferraris said. “I look
forward to many more of those extremely gratifying personal
and professional relationships in the years ahead.”
